University of Tennessee
Bordered by the Great Smoky Mountains, the eastern region of Tennessee is home to the flagship campus of the University of Tennessee system, a member of the Tennessee Board of Regents, and a private institute – Lee University in Cleveland.
Tennessee’s largest university, the University of Tennessee is located in Knoxville, and founded in 1794 – making it one of the oldest universities in the country. With an enrollment of nearly 28,000 students, the UT flagship campus is headquarters to nine undergraduate, and 11 graduate, schools (including the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga also in eastern Tennessee).
The University of Tennessee also features the Tennessee Volunteers varsity teams, and research facilities like the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the University of Tennessee Anthropological Research Facility, and the Cherokee Research Campus.
This being eastern Tennessee, we have to talk about East Tennessee State University – set in Johnson City in far northeastern Tennessee. The state’s fourth largest university, ETSU features a 340-acre urban campus – home to the East Tennessee State Buccaneers and Lady Buccaneers. Established in 1911, ETSU has an enrollment of roughly 15,000 students, and unique degree programs in rural medicine, bluegrass music, storytelling, and Appalachian Studies.
East Tennessee State University has a beautiful outdoor campus – home to the Basler Center for Physical Activity but also neighbors the Appalachian Trail and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
