Blue Ridge Mountains Activities

Appalachian Adventure in Eastern Tennessee

If you’re looking for adventure, the Blue Ridge Mountains are your answer.

Home to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, sections of the Appalachian Trail, and Tennessee towns like Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, the eastern edge of the Volunteer State is teeming with possibility.

The Blue Ridge Mountains are a massive playground for outdoors lovers. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park features over 850 miles of hiking trails, and have some of the best fly-fishing spots in the state.

Horseback riding and cycling is also encouraged in this 500,000-acre recreational hot-spot, but that’s not all eastern Tennessee has to offer. Make your way to the Tennessee River Valley for white water rafting on the Ocoee River and Nantahla River, and find hundreds of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding.

Looking to celebrate your newfound – or oldfound – love for the Blue Ridge Mountains? Festivals are held throughout the year in cities like Gatlinburg, Knoxville, and Pigeon Forge. Visit Dollywood for events like the Festival of Nations in March, Kidsfest in June, and the Gospel and Harvest Celebration in October.

Don’t miss the Gatlinburg Gateway Triathlon in May, the Smoky Mountains Songwriters Festival in August, and the Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration. Holiday events can spice up your December thanks to the Smoky Mountain Christmas Festival, the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Holiday Show, and the Fantasy of Lights Christmas Parade.

For the history buff in your family, don’t miss frontier features like the historic districts of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Check out the Cades Cove Historic District, Elkmont Historic District, Roaring Fork Historic District, and Noah Ogle Place – along with other sites on the National Register of Historic Places.

More historic attractions are found in eastern Tennessee cities, including the East Tennessee History Center of Knoxville, the Sevierville Commercial District of Sevierville and the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center of Townsend.

Outdoor activities, annual festivals, and plenty of historic sites – what more could you ask from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Tennessee?
